On December 13, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation unveiled the first trailer for ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’, the highly anticipated fourth chapter in the beloved franchise. Jack Black is back as the cherished character, Po, to face one of the most epic adventures in his history.
The movie’s synopsis reveals that Po is “tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace” but has a few things to work out before he can assume his new lofty position. The first order of business is to find and train a new Dragon Warrior, which could prove challenging, mainly since the film introduces a shape-shifting sorceress that he’ll have to take on. Thankfully, he gets the help of his trainer in the form of a quick-witted corsac fox named Zhen.

In a recent interview with NBC Insider, Mitchell delved into the story, confirming that the new chapter in the Kung Fu Panda franchise will take the heroes’ journey to an all-new level. He explains that the new film is Po’s “most epic adventure yet” and will feature some of the series’ best action and comedy.
Alongside Black, the voice cast features returning actors Dustin Hoffman as his Master Shifu, James Hong as Po’s adoptive father, Mr. Ping, Bryan Cranston as his birth father Li, and Ian McShane as his arch-nemesis Tai Lung. Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) also joins the cast as Han, the pangolin leader of a den of thieves. Newcomers Awkwafina and Viola Davis round out the critical voices for the film.
As the venerable Po prepares to relinquish his role as Dragon Warrior, he must embrace his life as a teacher by training a new fox apprentice named Zhen (voiced by Awkwafina). The movie introduces Chameleon, a shape-shifting sorceress who can steal the abilities of some of Po’s most ferocious previous foes. It’s the first time a female villain has appeared in the franchise, which isn’t surprising given its popularity.
The animated flick, which has been in the works since before the release of Kung Fu Panda 3 in 2016, is directed by Mike Mitchell (Trolls) and co-directed by Stephanie Ma Stine (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power). It will hit the screens on March 8.
