Kate Winslet is a Hollywood icon. Since her Sense and Sensibility (1996) and Titanic (1998) debuts, she has been a staple of the film industry. Over the last 26 years, the Academy Award winner has amassed a long list of prestigious awards, including a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and three BAFTAs. But even with all that success, the 48-year-old still can’t seem to get her identity right, as she often gets mistaken for another A-list actress.
The actress recently opened up about the mix-up during a recent The Graham Norton Show appearance. She explains that her Australian co-star Cate Blanchett gets mixed up for her frequently by fans – which she takes as a huge compliment.
“You know, I think it’s a massive compliment that people can see the similarity between us and feel like they have known you for years,” she said. “It’s adorable that people have that connection with you two, and I think it shows that you are a big star and many people will like you.”
Regarding Blanchett, Winslet admits that her fandom is so intense that she sometimes gets asked to play her. But she adds that it differs from what she would want to do.
As for the roles that Winslet actually wants to take on, she revealed that she’s very excited about her latest movie role—which is currently filming in Los Angeles. She’s starring in HBO’s The Regime alongside Hugh Jackman, and the actress revealed that it was an amazing experience working with her Sense and Sensibility co-star nearly 30 years later.
Kate will play an abused wife in the drama, which the actress describes as a “scary but important” role. She’s also starred in the recent Roman Polanski thriller Carnage with Jodie Foster and Christoph Waltz and the romantic comedy Labor Day with Josh Brolin. The actress is no stranger to period pieces, either. She starred as Judi Dench’s younger sister in the Richard Eyre adaptation of The Young Victoria and received an Oscar nomination for her work in The Reader.
In addition to her acting, Winslet has made an impressive mark in fashion. She’s been the face of Chanel for over a decade and has her line of handbags and beauty products. She’s also a philanthropist and is involved with numerous charities in the UK and beyond, helping to combat climate change, promote gender equality, and support women in the workplace.
Winslet started acting at seven and grew up on the British stage before making her film debut in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures at 17. She appeared in several other films, including Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility in 1996 and Titanic in 1998, a role that earned her an Academy Award nomination. She’s since won many more accolades, including a BAFTA and a BIFA for her performances in Revolutionary Road and Mildred Pierce.
