A surveillance plane of the US Navy overshot the runway while approaching a Marine Corps Base in Hawaii and crashed into the water, the BBC reported. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon off the island of Oahu, part of the Hawaiian island chain and home to the capital, Honolulu. The nine passengers aboard the Boeing Poseidon 8-A plane, a multi-mission patrol and reconnaissance aircraft resembling a commercial passenger jet’s airframe, were unhurt. Officials said the plane skidded off the runway at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay and ended up in the bay’s shallow waters. The Poseidon is a workhorse of US Navy operations, capable of carrying torpedoes and cruise missiles, conducting anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare missions, and providing intelligence gathering.
The crash occurred during a weather event in which clouds, rain, and poor visibility contributed to the mishap. The National Weather Service said the area where the aircraft went down received a lot of moisture, while winds reached 21 miles per hour.
Despite the bad weather conditions, officials said all those on board could swim to shore safely. A US Navy spokesperson told the AP that the plane was attempting to land at Kaneohe Bay, which lies on the windward side of Oahu. Marine Corps Base Hawaii deployed firefighters, military police, and waterfront personnel to the scene, the spokesperson said.
Pictures from the scene showed the aircraft partially submerged in Kaneohe Bay, with its wings resting on the water surface. The Marine Corps spokesperson said that the condition of the aircraft and its nine crew members is being assessed. A Coast Guard spokesperson said a Coast Guard helicopter was sent to the area, but rescue operations were soon called off.
Local media reported that the pilot of the aircraft remained at the controls and was not injured. Officials have not yet determined what caused the plane to overshoot the runway, but experts told the BBC that bad weather and winds were likely factors. Officials said that the crashing aircraft was not carrying weapons at the time of the accident.
Residents of the island are concerned about the possible effects on marine life, especially in light of the presence of jet fuel and other chemicals that could leak from the wrecked aircraft. Jonee Kaina, a resident who spoke to Hawaii News Now, urged authorities to be more careful about the repercussions of such incidents.
