India lifted the Asia Cup after routing defending champions Sri Lanka by ten wickets in the final, with Mohammed Siraj claiming a career-best 6-21, including four wickets in one over. The former RCB teammate was in complete control as he ran through the Sri Lankan batting line-up. The bowler was aided by the sharp shower that came shortly after the toss and spiced up the surface.
Siraj’s first over was a maiden, and he kept up the excellent work as he beat Kusal Perera with a straight delivery that took the edge and crashed into the off-stump. In the next over, he castled Pathum Nissanka with a full toss that moved away from right-handers and got the edge. Then he cleaned up Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, and Dhananjaya de Silva.
After the lunch break, Siraj continued his onslaught and cast Dasun Shanaka in the first ball of the third over with a fuller toss that went straight into the off-stump. He then ripped into the inexperienced middle order and returned Nissanka and Samarawickrama with peaches. He also bowled a leg-break that nipped the leg-stump of Asalanka in the crease and was caught by Ishan Kishan at cover point for his fourth wicket.
Sri Lanka lost their last six wickets for just 12 runs as they were bundled out in 15.2 overs. Opener Ishan Kishan (23) and Shubman Gill (27 balls) shared a hassle-free opening stand of 51 for the second wicket to take India to their target easily.
The final match was low-key as both teams looked to preserve their energy for the Super Fours and the World Cup qualifiers. Both sides rested their key players, with Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan coming in to replace Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Despite this, the pair produced a classy display and helped India win the title without much fuss.
