An Israeli missile struck a tent encampment in southern Gaza on Tuesday, targeting a group of displaced people gathered to watch a football match at a school, eyewitnesses reported on Wednesday. The attack killed at least 29 individuals, predominantly women and children, according to Palestinian officials. The explosion took place as spectators filled the school grounds in Abassan, east of Khan Younis, with vendors selling smoothies and biscuits. The IDF has announced plans to evacuate residents from the area, which has faced intense Israeli bombardment in recent days as part of an offensive against Hamas.
Israel is urging civilians to leave the area and has set up shelters and food for those who do. It also plans to clear out the town of Rafah and destroy Hamas’ last stronghold in the Gaza Strip. “The goal is to evacuate the Palestinian population from the area in a safe and dignified manner,” an Israeli military official said. The military has been coordinating with neighboring Arab countries, including Egypt.
In a separate development, the UN says displaced people are struggling to get food as the ongoing conflict makes it difficult for aid trucks to pass through the Gaza Strip. The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says it has conducted assessments at sites hosting new waves of displaced people and found critical levels of need across all sectors.

Israeli forces dropped thousands of leaflets in Gaza City on Wednesday, urging residents to evacuate amid an intensified assault on the territory’s central city. The leaflets, addressed to “everyone in Gaza City,” set out routes out of the city and warned that the urban area would remain a dangerous combat zone as Israel hits Hamas targets.
The UN says more than 60 schools in Gaza City are now sheltering displaced people, as are two hospitals and six medical points. It says nine out of every ten displaced people live in extreme vulnerability conditions.
Israel says it struck “several terrorists who were conducting terror activities and using the structures of a school in the Nuseirat area as cover,” AFP reports. The army added that it used precision munition in the attack, which came after Israeli bullets killed a 13-year-old boy at a site in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah district on Tuesday.
Spain’s Foreign Minister Josep Borrell has condemned an Israeli airstrike on the home of a displaced family in Gaza, calling for those responsible to be held accountable. He said it was a “heinous massacre against civilians,” adding that Israel must ensure its security is protected. Borrell’s remarks come as Israel is destroying buildings in the Gaza Strip that are being used to house families displaced from other parts of the city. He also said he was concerned about “serious violations of international law” during the operation.
