Tech billionaire Elon Musk will be in Israel next week, during which he’ll meet with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The two will also reportedly visit towns near the Gaza border that Hamas attacked on October 7. The Jerusalem Post reported, citing Hebrew broadcast channel N12, that Musk will hold collaborative talks with an Israeli artificial intelligence startup called Cortica during his trip. The newspaper added that the trip could include visiting Israel’s vast southern desert region, the Negev.
The trip will mark the latest chapter in Netanyahu’s attempt to build a close relationship with Silicon Valley as Israel seeks to strengthen its high-tech economy. In past years, the prime minister has visited California several times to draw investment into the country’s nascent AI sector. The meeting will allow Musk to show off Israel’s strengths in the field while helping Netanyahu promote the country as a global leader in the tech industry.
However, the upcoming visit will come when Netanyahu faces mounting opposition at home and abroad. A day before he arrived in the US, demonstrators gathered outside of Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California, to protest the judicial overhaul that Netanyahu’s right-wing government is pushing through. Many economists, rating agencies, and Israeli business leaders have warned that the sweeping reforms will harm the economy, and tech entrepreneurs have begun to move operations elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Musk is mired with the Anti-Defamation League over allegations of antisemitism on his X platform, formerly Twitter. The entrepreneur has accused the ADL of making unfounded accusations that have scared away advertisers and damaged his company’s revenue. The ADL says the claims are a form of hate speech and seeks to sue Musk for millions of dollars.
In a conversation with Musk broadcast live on Monday, Netanyahu asked the CEO of X to “roll back” antisemitic messages on the platform and promised to take action. The discussion also touched on the broader topic of artificial intelligence, with Netanyahu urging Musk to use his technology to combat human trafficking and other social issues.
In the past, Musk has demonstrated a strong stance against Islamist extremism, having suspended the Jisr Collective’s Twitter account after they praised a lethal attack on Israel in Jerusalem. The CEO has also expressed support for free speech and has defended his right to delete controversial posts on his platforms.
