Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, has launched the second generation of its groundbreaking Shenxing fast-charging battery, setting a new benchmark for EV performance. Announced at an event in Shanghai, the innovative battery promises to power over 67 new EV models in 2025, offering unprecedented charging speeds and extended range. This development marks a significant step toward alleviating range anxiety and accelerating the global transition to electric mobility.
The second-generation Shenxing battery boasts a remarkable 12C charging rate, enabling a 520-kilometer (323-mile) driving range with just a five-minute charge. CATL’s Chief Technology Officer, Gao Huan, highlighted that the battery can reach 80% capacity from zero in approximately 15 minutes, even in challenging conditions. Tests conducted at -40°C demonstrated the battery’s resilience, achieving a 30-80% charge in 30 minutes, while its lifespan is estimated to exceed 10,000 cycles. With a peak charging power of 1.3 megawatts and compatibility with all charger types, the Shenxing battery is poised to redefine EV convenience.
Built on CATL’s advanced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology, the Shenxing battery offers up to 800 kilometers (497 miles) of range, addressing one of the primary concerns for EV adoption—limited driving distance. The battery’s 830 kW discharge capability at low charge levels ensures consistent performance, even in demanding scenarios. By leveraging cutting-edge materials and thermal management, CATL has enhanced the battery’s safety and efficiency, reinforcing its position as the world’s largest EV battery maker with a 36.8% global market share in 2023.
The launch comes amid fierce competition in the EV battery sector, particularly from Chinese automaker BYD, which recently introduced its own five-minute charging technology. While BYD’s Super E-Platform delivers 400 kilometers of range in five minutes, CATL’s Shenxing battery surpasses it in range and charging speed, positioning CATL as a formidable leader. Industry analysts suggest that CATL’s advancements could challenge competitors and drive down costs, making EVs more accessible to consumers worldwide.
CATL’s innovation aligns with the growing demand for fast-charging infrastructure as EV adoption surges. In 2024, China saw a 40% increase in battery-powered and hybrid vehicle sales, reflecting strong consumer enthusiasm. The Shenxing battery’s adaptability to diverse charging systems and its robust performance in extreme temperatures make it a game-changer for markets with varied climates. CATL also plans to expand its battery-swapping network, further reducing downtime for EV drivers.
As CATL continues to innovate, the second-generation Shenxing battery underscores its commitment to sustainable energy solutions. With mass production slated for 2025, the technology is expected to reshape the EV landscape, offering drivers a charging experience comparable to refueling a gasoline car. This breakthrough not only strengthens CATL’s global dominance but also paves the way for a cleaner, more efficient future in transportation.
