When Brie Larson first announced she would star as Captain Marvel, it was met with cheers and applause. It was a role that many believed could finally give an actress who had spent her career as one of Hollywood’s most beloved genre stars a chance to prove that she had the power to lead an entire universe of superheroes and blockbuster films. It was also a role that would give fans the chance to finally see Captain Marvel’s origin story and how she came to acquire her incredible powers, as well as why it is so difficult for her to control them.
The first film, Captain Marvel (2019), proved to be a massive success, becoming the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time and launching a franchise with a sequel, The Marvels (2023). Despite this success, there was a large segment of the fanbase that seemed to hate both Larson and the character. In a new behind-the-scenes featurette for The Marvels, Larson discusses her experience playing the iconic superhero. The video is all about her journey from being a Kree renegade to her transformation into a mighty Avenger. It also shows the moment she knew that her character would be a significant force to be reckoned with.
Larson has also addressed why Captain Marvel didn’t make a big appearance in Avengers: Endgame. She explains that Danvers, now a space-traveling workaholic, left Earth because she was visiting planets to protect them from danger. She says this was the in-universe reason for her absence but that fans may not understand why she wasn’t present for a few crucial moments of the movie.
Lastly, the video shows clips from the film’s final scenes in which Larson and her co-stars discuss their feelings about the trolls that plagued the production. She says that while the trolls may have caused them to lose focus, they have also taught her that she is more vital than ever.
