Celebrities often find themselves in a contentious discussion over sensitive political issues. And this is particularly true when it comes to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The latest celebrity to join this discussion is Angelina Jolie, who recently took to social media and shared her thoughts on the Gaza War. According to reports, the actress blamed Israel for waging this war.
She mentioned that the Jewish state is responsible for the “deliberate bombing of a trapped population.” Along with that, she posted a picture depicting the destruction that happened in the Jabalia refugee camp. Jabalia is one of the largest refugee camps in Gaza, and Israeli air strikes hit it. The attack was aimed at killing a Hamas commander. However, it also killed dozens of civilians and injured many others.
In her post, Jolie also mentioned that the civilians in Gaza are being denied food, medicine, and humanitarian aid. This is a violation of international law. She then went on to say that Gaza has been an open-air prison for nearly two decades and is now “a mass grave where 40% of those murdered are innocent children”.
Jolie continued by saying that it is time to end the siege on Gaza, adding that the few relief trucks that enter the enclave only deliver a fraction of what is needed and that the ongoing bombardment is creating new urgent needs daily. She also called on world leaders to help end the violence in Gaza.
Aside from her Instagram post, Jolie also addressed the situation in a letter to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. She wrote that she was saddened by the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas on Oct. 7 and that, like millions of other people, she is sickened by the loss of life and the kidnapping of innocent civilians. She also called for the release of the hostages.
Some of the comments on Jolie’s Instagram post were supportive of her views, while others were not. Many commenters complimented her on using her platform to bring attention to this issue. Other commenters, however, were upset with her opinions and accused her of being ignorant.
As a result of her strong statements, Jolie has become a leading figure in the call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Her words have sparked debate over the underlying issues that have led to this conflict, as well as what can be done to prevent future clashes.
The Israel-Hamas war is still raging, and it’s expected that more celebrities will voice their opinions on the matter in the coming days. The question is whether these celebrities will take a stand for Israel or will they speak up for the Palestinians.
