Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft’s expansive open-world game set in a faraway galaxy, was briefly known to be eyeing a? late 2024 release window. That has since been corrected to reflect a general timespan this year, with the publisher confirming to Kotaku that the timing was incorrectly displayed.
This may seem like a minor change, but it does mean that the publisher’s latest addition to its franchise is likely to be delayed until later this year. A fall release would allow the team behind the Massive Entertainment-helmed title to ensure it’s ready for launch and not overworked.
It also gives the studio breathing room to expand on what’s already revealed. The cinematic trailer showcased at last month’s Xbox Showcase was a promising start, with the publisher touting that the game, both iconic and new, will allow players to explore “distinct planets” across the universe. That could be an opportunity to add some depth to the Galactic Civil War era seen in various comics but doesn’t feel fully realized in the movies.
Star Wars Outlaws is set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi movies, with Kay Vess attempting one of the biggest heists in history alongside her small crew – a four-legged alien called Nix and an enforcer droid named ND-5. It’s described as a third-person action adventure with stealth elements, free space travel that doesn’t require loading screens, dogfighting, and speeder traversal.
The original Disney Parks blog post, which IGN spotted, spelled out the late 2024 window for the title before being updated to a more general timeframe this year. That’s a significant departure from the specificity that had been teased in the first place, though it’s still a safe bet for fans eager to get their hands on this game.
Ubisoft and Massive have yet to reveal a full gameplay trailer, though it’s expected sometime this summer. It’s slated to launch on PC and the Xbox Series X and S, with no word yet on a PlayStation 5 version.
