Sebastian Stan, the actor known for his role as Bucky Barnes in Marvel Cinematic Universe, is all set to return to the big screen with another biopic. He will portray a young Trump in the former US President’s rise to power. The film, titled ‘The Apprentice’, has already gone on floors and is helmed by Oscar-nominated Iranian filmmaker Ali Abbasi. The film will delve into the mentor-protege relationship between Trump and his lawyer Roy Cohn, who Sucession’s Jeremy Strong plays. Maria Bakalova will play Trump’s first wife, Ivana. Filming began earlier this week.
It is a ‘true and complex story of an American dynasty.’ The film charts the origins of a significant political figure and explores the moral and human cost of ambition in a corrupt world. It also reveals the dangers of a leader who is both ruthless and insecure.
The screenplay is penned by Gabriel Sherman, who wrote the 2014 book on Fox News founder Roger Ailes, The Loudest Voice in the Room, which was later adapted for Showtime’s series starring Russell Crowe. It is produced by Daniel Beckerman of Scythia Films, Jacob Jerek of Profile Pictures, and Ruth Treacy of Tailored Films, with Grant Johnson and Gabriel Sherman executive producing.

Stan recently earned a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination for his performance as Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy and also stars as Captain America’s sidekick Bucky Barnes. The actor has several other projects in the pipeline, including this year’s Sony film Dumb Money and Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Jeremy Strong and Maria Bakalova round out the Apprentice’s cast. The former is a veteran of the Broadway stage and has starred in numerous critically acclaimed films, such as The Architect (2006), Kings (2009), and Gone (2012). Bakalova, on the other hand, is a Russian film and TV actress best known for her work in The Sacred Lies of the Fathers (2015), Black Swan (2010), and Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2008).
The film will be based on actual events and will be shot on location in New York City. It is expected to be released in 2022. In the meantime, Stan will continue to shoot for the upcoming fourth Captain America movie, due out in 2023. In addition, he will be appearing in the upcoming A24 drama, A Different Man, and director Michael Showalter’s feature debut, Mood Swings.
