The 2021 iMac is one of the oldest Macs in Apple’s lineup, and it’s been overdue for a refresh for quite some time now. Apple usually updates its desktop computer lineup every one to two years, so this fall is a good time for the company to introduce a follow-up model. And that’s precisely what it may do at the end of this month, according to a new report.
Apple is reportedly planning a Mac-centered product launch that could include the refreshed 24-inch iMac by the end of this month. It would be the first update to the all-in-one Mac since April 2021, and it will also likely mark the debut of the company’s next-generation M3 chip, expected to deliver improved power and efficiency compared to the current M2 processor.
As per the latest report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the refreshed iMac will be based on TSMC’s 3-nanometer process, making it much thinner than its predecessor. It will also offer better display quality with a wider P3 color gamut and True Tone technology that automatically calibrates the screen’s colors to match ambient lighting conditions.
Another significant change is expected to be the addition of USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 support, making it possible for the iMac to handle up to 40Gbps transfer speeds. It will also improve battery life by enabling up to 2.4 times faster charging than the previous iMac. The new iMac is rumored to be available in two variations: the standard model with a 6-core 2.8GHz processor and the higher-end 8-core 3.4GHz model, which will feature 256GB RAM. The higher-end version will upgrade the four USB-C ports to USB 3.0 and add gigabit Ethernet.
Aside from these upgrades, the refreshed iMac is expected to retain the same design as its 2021 predecessor. A large display had characterized the iMac’s aesthetic, gently bowed out in the back, tapering to a sharp edge and perched on a single curved foot. However, the 2021 iMac was the first to ditch that hand-me-down look, as it adopted a more flat body similar to that of a computer monitor and utilized more modern color options.
With a sleeker look and improved performance, the refreshed iMac is expected to be a worthy successor to its 2021 predecessor. It will be interesting to see how it will fare against rivals like Dell’s Inspiron i5000 and the HP Envy x360 13.
