Sophie and Joe Jonas married four years ago and have two daughters together. The couple recently announced that they’re filing for divorce and have asked their fans to respect their privacy. Now, in a new turn of events, it has come to know that the two have reached a temporary agreement to keep their kids in New York amidst the ongoing custody dispute. According to sources, the couple has been going back and forth over who will get the girls at different times as the actress films a television series in the U.K. and the singer tours with his brothers and their band. The source added that Sophie was reluctant to take the children with her as she felt it would disrupt their life and routines, but eventually agreed because she didn’t want to be apart from them for long.
In her recent court filing, Sophie alleges that Joe has been holding their daughters’ passports with him in the U.S. and refusing to send them back home to her native country of England. According to the documents, Turner claims that they initially planned on moving to their “forever home” in England in April of 2023 and were even buying a house there. However, she claims that Joe took the 3- and 1-year-olds with him while he was on tour with his brothers and their band, and she began filming her Joan mini-series in the U.K. She says that when she attempted to pick up the kids this week in New York, Joe refused to return their passports and send them home with her.
TMZ notes that Sophie filed the lawsuit Thursday and alleged that her marriage with Joe “broke down very suddenly” after they argued on August 15. She says in the document that the pair planned to raise their daughters in England, where the kids will be fully involved in daily life and culture, receive primary healthcare, and participate in extracurricular activities.
Joe’s rep reacted to the lawsuit later and alleged that the “Sucker” singer initiated the divorce proceedings in Florida and that Sophie was aware of it. He further said he’s seeking shared parenting so the kids can be raised in the U.S. and England, which aligns with the prenuptial agreement the pair signed.
Interestingly, the couple’s split comes just days after they were spotted together in New York City arm-in-arm. In the same statement on their Instagram pages, they also asked their fans and followers for privacy while they work through this difficult time. Hopefully, the family can come to some custody arrangement soon that’s beneficial for everyone involved. In the meantime, it’s good to see they’re both still trying to put their best foot forward.
