Raye, the British singer-songwriter, dominated the Brit Awards nominations on Wednesday, establishing a new record with seven nods. The 25-year-old took a risk by leaving her label and going independent last year, which paid off with a chart-topping album and a Mercury Prize nod that put her at the forefront of this year’s British music scene. Her nominations include Artist of the Year, album for My 21st Century Blues, and Song of the Year for hit single Escapism. It’s a remarkable rise for the woman who has long fought to break into the mainstream and define success on her terms.
Raye’s success reflected a broader shift in gender dynamics at the Brits, where female artists make up more than half of the nominations. She was part of a strong pack of women nominated in the main categories that included Dua Lipa, Jessie Ware, and Olivia Dean, rappers Central Cee and J Hus, record producer Fred Again, and Little Simz. The list also includes the all-female five-piece indie rock act Young Fathers and dance music stalwart Calvin Harris, who both earned three nods.
Among the notable snubs were Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi, who failed to cut either album or artist of the year despite chart-topping releases. Stormzy, Sam Smith, and Gorillaz received just one nod despite being consistent Brits favorites.
The Rolling Stones and Blur were recognized for their contributions to Britain’s pop music with nods in the classic categories of Best British Group and Best Rock Album. The Stones are up for their first rock award since 2012, while Blur is up for their fifth as they continue to redefine the indie genre with their funk-infused return to form with Their Brutal Lies and Beautiful Lie, which has seen them reclaim their position at the top of the UK charts.
Other names that got nods included grime star Stormzy, up for British breakthrough Act of the Year and Song of the Year for the anthem “Crossing the Line.” Pop-soul singer Jessie Ware was recognized for her second album, Brutal Lovers, and her collaboration with 070 Shake on Escapism in the best urban contemporary album category.
This year’s ceremony takes place on 2 March and will be hosted by comedian Bradley Walsh. The full lineup of performers has yet to be announced. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) presents the awards to recognize and celebrate excellence in UK-based music. Winners will be crowned at a ceremony held in London’s O2 Arena. The BRIT Awards are the most prestigious and coveted in the UK and are often considered a precursor to the Grammys. Millions around the world watch the show. Previous winners of the main categories have included Adele, Ed Sheeran, and Sam Smith. A record number of entries were submitted to the 2024 awards, with the finalists chosen by an expert panel of judges.
