While Brooks didn’t win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards last weekend, she and cast members took home the NAACP Image award on Saturday for Outstanding Motion Picture. She told Reuters that out of all her accolades, she’s most grateful to the NAACP Awards for acknowledging the team behind “The Color Purple.”
The film, adapted from Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Broadway musical about an abused housewife who finds freedom, saw a revival when Whoopi Goldberg won a record eleven Oscar nominations in 1985. The new film, directed by Blitz Bazawule, earned just one nod from the academy, but a sweep at the Image Awards could help boost its chances of an Oscar nod this year.
The 2024 NAACP Image Awards were held on Saturday at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Queen Latifah hosted the ceremony, and The Color Purple won movie of the year. Star Fantasia Barrino won Breakthrough Actress in a Film. Colman Domingo won Actor of the Year for his roles in The Color Purple and Rustin, while R&B singer Usher was named Entertainer of the Year.

In addition to the top prizes, the Blitz Bazawule-directed film received recognition for its cinematography, costume design, music, and hairstyling. It also won acting honors for its lead performers, Barrino, Domingo, and Taraji P. Henson.
Barrino, who previously won an Image award for her Broadway performance as Celie, said she didn’t expect to win. She was thrilled to win the Breakthrough Actress Award but is more excited about her upcoming projects.
She’s set to return to Broadway for the play Andra and Bernice, based on Alice Walker’s novels of the same name. She’s also working on a movie adaptation of The Color Purple, which is expected to be released in 2023.
Henson, who received a nomination for her role as Shug Avery in The Color Purple, gave a moving speech about the film’s importance. “It’s a story of redemption and forgiveness, a love story, a family story, and a story of survival.”
In addition to the four big acting wins The Color Purple won awards for cast performance and writing in a motion picture. It also won the top prize for film at this year’s Black History Month Film Festival in Los Angeles and received an honorary mention for film of the year at the Cannes Film Festival.
