Mikael Granlund scored 37 seconds into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a wild 6-5 road win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. The Sharks erased a 4-0 deficit, with Nico Sturm and Tomas Hertl each scoring twice, to hand the Wings their third straight loss. Granlund’s goal came on a two-on-one rush, with the forward getting a step ahead of defenseman Filip Hronek and beating goalie Ville Husso. The goal was the first of the season for the forward, acquired from Nashville in the offseason as part of the Erik Karlsson trade.
The Sharks opened the game with a fast pace, putting 14 shots on goal in the first 20 minutes. But they slumped when Timo Meier was called for a five-minute major and ejection for kneeing the Wild’s Evgeny Svechnikov into the boards late in the first period. That left the team playing catch-up for the rest of the game.
Karlsson opened the scoring with a one-timer just 44 seconds into the second period, but the Wild quickly replied. Joel Eriksson Ek took a pass from Jon Merrill inside his circle, deked to the right, and tucked a shot past Sharks goalie James Reimer. Then, Daniel Sprong and Ben Chiarot got their own goals on the same power play, with the latter’s shot bouncing off Erikkson Ek in front of Reimer for a 4-1 lead at 9:05 of the second.
Hertl tied the game with 1:29 left in regulation on a rebound after Hertl’s initial shot hit the post. Hertl completed his hat trick in the extra period, scoring on a one-timer off a pass from Lucas Raymond. The goal broke a 3-3 tie and put the Sharks on top.
With the game tied and the clock ticking down, both teams tried to take advantage of a delayed penalty, which gave each side extra time in the offensive zone. The Sharks held the advantage, but it was wasted when a flurry of penalties took the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Sharks’ Corey Perry missed on a two-on-one, then turned the puck over on the ensuing faceoff with Ryan Hartman, who was trying to skate up the middle. The Wild then jumped into the neutral zone and had a 5-on-4 for nearly six minutes but couldn’t convert on any of their three chances.
