Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations today held up a card with Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar’s phone number, telling member nations to call him if they want a lasting ceasefire in Gaza. “If you want a ceasefire, call and ask for Yahya Sinwar,” Gilad Erdan said, referring to the terror mastermind who Israel officials say is top of the list for assassination.
The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a nonbinding resolution on Tuesday demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, taking the lead from the paralyzed Security Council and piling pressure on Israel and Washington. One hundred fifty-three countries voted in favor of the measure, while only ten countries, including the United States, voted against it, and 23 abstained.
Earlier this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the US administration is not “in the driver’s seat” in the conflict with Hamas, and he would not agree to a truce unless “all the demands” of his government are met. Those demands include an end to the Hamas rocket attacks on Israel and the release of hostages.
An Israeli soldier was killed in a tunnel explosion near a northern border crossing with Egypt on Wednesday, and a Palestinian man blew himself up at a military base to protest Israel’s attacks on Gaza. The violence has caused a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with the population on the move and food supplies running low. Thousands of homes have been destroyed, and hundreds of people are trapped in their neighborhoods as air and ground troops fight for control of the territory.
Amid the mounting civilian casualties, the cousin of an Israeli captive in Gaza said his family’s priority has to be to free them. Boaz Atzili spoke to a rally Sunday in Washington, DC, where supporters called on Israel to focus its attention on the enclave’s inhabitants rather than the conflict with Hamas.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to visit Egypt on Monday in an attempt to reach a deal with the Palestinians. The two sides will hold indirect talks in Cairo, where they are expected to discuss a deal for an immediate ceasefire and work toward a long-term deal that includes the return of Palestinian refugees and recognition of Israel as a Jewish state.
