The Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah militia announced on Saturday that it had launched “squadrons of explosive-laden drones” at an Israeli military base in the north in response to the killing of a Hamas commander in southern Lebanon. According to Hezbollah, its fighters targeted the Michve Alon base near the Galilee town of Safed, marking the first time the group had struck this facility.
An Israeli strike killed Samer al-Hajj, the military wing commander for Hamas in Sidon, on Friday, sparking retaliatory attacks from Hezbollah and escalating an already volatile conflict between Israel and Gaza’s dominant Hamas militia. The militant group has launched a campaign of rocket and drone strikes at targets in Israel since the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that sparked the Gaza war.
Hezbollah also launched a rocket at a military headquarters in the northern city of Nahariya on Saturday, which did not cause any damage. The rocket landed on the roof of the building, which houses the headquarters for the Israel Defense Forces’ Northern Command, but did not cause any injuries.

On Saturday, Israeli aircraft struck a Hezbollah training center and other locations in northern Lebanon that were not identified in detail. In the Gaza Strip, an Israeli airstrike hit a Hamas target in Shejaia on the outskirts of the coastal enclave but did not cause any injuries or property damage.
In a separate incident, an Iranian-made drone was fired at a US military convoy in Syria, the US Central Command confirmed. The convoy was not damaged in the incident, which occurred on the edge of a contested area between the provinces of Taiz and Lahj.
The US military has a significant regional presence, including several bases and powerful air and naval fleets. It has a significant interest in the stability of the Middle East, especially as the conflicts in Syria and Yemen continue to escalate, with tensions growing between the US and Iran.
More than 240 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in an Israeli military onslaught on Gaza that has been ongoing since Oct. 7. Hundreds more have been wounded. The conflict has displaced nearly all of the 2.4 million people living in the coastal enclave, and many have sought shelter in schools. The military has defended its retaliatory strikes, saying that Hamas regularly uses civilian infrastructure and shelters to conduct military activities. But the Palestinian group denies that claim, saying it operates from within school buildings and other civilian facilities. The school that was hit on Saturday in Gaza City was sheltering families, according to the territory’s civil defense agency and the Hamas-run government media office. The attack happened as displaced residents were gathering for morning prayers at the site. Video of the aftermath showed a large number of body bags on the ground, empty food tins, and burnt mattresses.
