Insurance is one of the most important financial decisions a small business owner will make and one of the easiest to mess up. The temptation is to treat it as a box to be ticked – buy the cheapest policy that meets any legal or contractual requirements and move on to more pressing priorities. That works well until you have to make a claim, when the quality of the insurer and the policy is all that matters. Selecting the right insurance company for your small business is not difficult, but it does require asking the right questions and resisting the urge to optimize purely for price.
Know what coverage your business actually needs
First thing of all is that before you proceed to evaluate any insurer you need to understand well the different types of risk that your business is exposed to and the different types of insurance that would be needed for these risks. The insurance policies the two would require from one to another would be very dissimilar. For example, one is a retailer and one is a freelancer working at a home office. There is cyber liability exposure for businesses that handle sensitive client information compared to product-only businesses. The major forms of small business insurance are the general liability insurance that brings coverage against third-party bodily injury and property damage claims. Other types include professional liability that covers professional malpractice, commercial insurance for businesses’ property and employees’ liability insurance which you must get legally when you employ people. Understanding which ones are your business’s needs first is largely the key step that will prevent the unnecessary buying of insurance policies or leaving some real risk exposure uninsured at the first contact you make with the insurance companies.
Review Claims Reputation & Financial Strength
The value of an insurance policy depends on the insurer’s ability and willingness to pay claims when they occur. The two most important metrics here are: The first is financial strength Independent rating agencies such as AM Best, Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s assess the financial strength of insurance companies and give ratings that reflect their ability to meet future claims obligations. Check the insurance company’s rating. The second is claims reputation – how the insurer behaves in practice when policyholders make claims. Review platforms, industry forums and the experience of other small business owners in your sector are all useful sources of this intelligence. You don’t want to find out at the worst possible moment that your insurer is not up to snuff, with a track record of disputed claims, slow processing, or unreasonable denials.
Compare policies and prices
Price is important, but it is a very incomplete way to compare insurance policies. Two policies with identical premiums can offer dramatically different levels of real protection, depending on their exclusion clauses, limits of coverage, levels of excess, and the specific definitions they use to describe covered events. Before you make any decision, read the policy wording carefully – particularly the exclusions section, which sets out the times and circumstances when the insurer will not pay. If you don’t understand the language, ask the insurer or broker to put it in plain language. If they can’t, that’s a signal worth noticing in itself.
See a specialist broker
For most small business owners, the most effective approach to navigating the market is to work with an independent insurance broker that specializes in commercial coverage. A good broker will know the risks that are specific to your industry, have access to a range of insurers and policies that are not always available directly, and be able to advocate on your behalf if you have a disputed claim. Professional advice is thus virtually free to most small businesses, as the cost is generally included in the premium, not charged separately.
Choosing the right insurance company takes a few hours of careful thought. The cost of a bad choice may be far more than the premium you saved.
