Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, is betting big on next-generation Artificial Intelligence (gen AI) tools to empower its vast network of overseas merchants. This strategic move comes as Alibaba seeks to maintain its competitive edge in the global marketplace, particularly in the face of rising competition from domestic players like Shein and Temu.
Kaifu Zhang, Vice President of Alibaba Group and head of the AI Initiative for Alibaba International Digital Commerce, recently spoke at the Reuters NEXT conference in Singapore. He highlighted the company’s optimism regarding AI’s potential to transform its international operations, including platforms like AliExpress and Lazada.
Alibaba acknowledges the global landscape of AI innovation. “China is pretty much on par with the US in terms of AI innovation rate,” Zhang remarked, emphasizing the significant advancements made in China and Europe concerning open-source AI technology.

The company’s international e-commerce unit was recently restructured as an independent entity, Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group. Aidge leverages Alibaba’s expertise in e-commerce by utilizing powerful large language models (LLMs) and computer vision models.
LLMs are AI that understand, summarize, generate, and predict new content. This translates to practical benefits for merchants. The pilot program also explores over 15 APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) integrating with Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) partners and independent service vendors. Early results from the pilot program are promising. Tatiana Palhares, Chief Product Officer at Daraz, a leading e-commerce platform in South Asia and a subsidiary of Alibaba, expressed optimism about Aidge’s potential. “Adopting Alibaba International’s Aidge AI suite has been a seamless process and can potentially be a game-changer for our business,” she stated.
